Out of the clear blue, the vague chorus of a song was stuck in my mind. After much shuffling through iTunes, I finally located the tune and proceeded to listen to it on repeat more than fifty times in the past few days. Unfamiliar with both the band and the song's origin, a little research revealed that the achingly beautiful "Kiss Me At The Gate" actually appeared on Gossip Girl a few weeks ago. Like much of my music, I must have downloaded it and promptly forgot about it.
The New Monarchs, a little known band signed only to a local record label, was plucked from relative obscurity in Minnesota by Alexandra Patsavas, the soundtrack supervisor for every show that ever mattered, from Grey's Anatomy to Gossip Girl to Chuck (the action hero, not the Bass).
If you can get enough of Alexandra's fab music taste, tune into Rockville CA, a online-only series developed by OC & GG screenwriter Josh Schwartz that certainly doesn't dissapoint. The show is filmed in short six-minute webisodes and has fantastic bands like Phantom Planet and Frightened Rabbit playing lively performaces in music clubs reminiscent of Seth Cohen's beloved The Bait Shop.
