Karachi situation intense after MQM MPA Gunned Down

 KARACHI: Raza Haider, MQM leader and member Sindh Assembly, and his guard have been gunned down here in Nazimabad on Monday, Geo News reported.

Unknown armed motorcyclists fired shots at Raza Haider as well as his guard when he was preparing to attend a funeral prayer at Jamia Masjid of Nazimabad Block No.2.

Raza Haider, who received a bullet in his head died when he was being rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The guard later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical aid at the hospital.

The MQM leader was elected from PS-94 Karachi 6.

Separate incidents of firing were reported in different parts of the city shortly after the fatal attack on MQM leader while two vehicles were set on fire in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

The incident sent a wave of fear and panic across the metropolis, as shopkeepers pulled down their shutters in view of any violent reaction by enraged people.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik condemned the incident, urging the people to remain calm.

He termed the targeted killings in Karachi as a ‘latest formula’ being used to destabilize the country.

Rehman Malik urged MQM leaders to wait for investigation and called upon the people to observe restraint.

He said he would soon hold a meeting with MQM leaders.

MQM leaders Babar Ghauri and Haider Abbas Rizvi expressed profound grief on the tragic incident.

“It would be difficult to put a cap on the chapter opened (today),” Babar Ghauri asserted.

Noori opens ‘Form’ with ‘Hor Vi Neevan Ho’, an evocative tribute to the legendary folk singer Hamid Ali Bela. Inspired from a rare, publicly unheard recording of Bela, the rendition sees the Noori boys (Ali Noor and Ali Hamza) collaborate with their mother Noor Zehra Kazim as she brings the unique music instrument sagar veena to the Coke Studio platform. In their purest rock avatar, Karavan delivers a thrilling ‘Kaisay Mumkin Hai’ next up. Acoustics are traded with electric guitars on this track, which Karavan is performing live for the first time along with backing vocalists.  Re-affirming their repo for bringing in the flavors of exotic lands, Zeb & Haniya maintain the strong currents of folk music in this session with ‘Nazaar Eyle’. A folk story from Turkey, the song stands out for its mirroring of the rich heritage of subcontinent, derived from disparate cultures.  Spontaneity, sweetness and verve are all thrown together as Amanat Ali and Sanam Marvi pair up in the fast-paced ‘Haq Maujood’. The kalam by Sachal Sarmast is set to a tune inspired from the traditional Sindhi dhamal rhythm and is unique for featuring a drum solo towards the finale. 'Form' concludes with a theatrical performance by Arif Lohar in ‘Mirza Sahibaan’. Based on a tragic love story of the same name, Lohar lends 'Mirza Sahibaan' his signature energetic magnetism and infectious glee.

Deaths as Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship

 

More than 10 people have been killed after Israeli commandos stormed a convoy of ships carrying aid to the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army says.

Armed forces boarded the largest vessel overnight, clashing with some of the 500 people on board.
It happened about 40 miles (64 km) out to sea, in international waters.
Israel says its soldiers were shot at and attacked with weapons; the activists say Israeli troops came on board shooting.
There has been widespread condemnation of the violence, while the European Union has called for an inquiry to establish what happened.
'Guns and knives' The six-ship flotilla, carrying 10,000 tonnes of aid, left the coast of Cyprus on Sunday and had been due to arrive in Gaza on Monday.
Israel says its soldiers boarded the lead ship in the early hours but were attacked with axes, knives, bars and at least two guns
"Unfortunately this group were dead-set on confrontation," Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev told the BBC.
"Live fire was used against our forces. They initiated the violence, that's 100% clear," he said.
Organisers of the flotilla said at least 30 people were wounded in the incident. Israel says 10 of its soldiers were injured, one seriously.
A leader of Israel's Islamic Movement, Raed Salah, who was on board, was among those hurt.
Audrey Bomse, a spokesperson for the Free Gaza Movement, which is behind the convoy, told the BBC Israel's actions were disproportionate.
"We were not going to pose any violent resistance. The only resistance that there might be would be passive resistance such as physically blocking the steering room, or blocking the engine room downstairs, so that they couldn't get taken over. But that was just symbolic resistance."

She said there was "absolutely no evidence of live fire".
Israel is towing the boats to the port of Ashdod and says it will deport the passengers from there. It says it will deliver the ships' aid to Gaza.

Pakistan to restores YouTube, block certain videos

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan have restored access to YouTube but will block videos offensive to Muslims that are posted on the video-sharing site, the government said Wednesday.
A number of high-profile websites were blocked in Pakistan last week over offensive content, such as a Facebook page that urges users to post images of Islam's Prophet Muhammad. Many citizens supported the crackdown, but some questioned why entire sites were blocked rather than specific pages or videos.
The government seemed to move in that direction Wednesday by deciding it would restore access to YouTube but continue to block videos "displaying profane or sacrilegious material," said Najibullah Malik, the secretary at Pakistan's information technology ministry.
The government is issuing orders to Internet service providers to implement the decision, he said. YouTube was yet not available as of Wednesday evening in the capital.
Facebook is still blocked, and Malik said no decision on it would be made until a court hearing at the end of the month.
Most Muslims regard depictions of the prophet, even favorable ones, as blasphemous.
Large and sometimes violent protests erupted in Pakistan and other Muslim nations in 2006 when a Danish newspaper published cartoons of Muhammad, and again in 2008 when the cartoons were reprinted.

Facebook ‘Draw Mohammad Day’ a Victory for Muslims – Cartoonist Molly Norris Apologizes

Molly Norris the Cartoonist behind the condemned Facebook “Draw Mohammad Day” have apologized to the Muslim world and have realized it to be her biggest mistake out of ignorance.

Following is what she says on her website:

I did NOT ‘declare’ May 20 to be “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day.”
I made a cartoon about the television show South Park being censored. (I wish that was what our energies were going toward — protesting revolutionmuslim.com’s threat to Comedy Central, and Comedy Central’s over reaction to it which set America on a slippery slope toward censorship!)
At any rate, my satirical poster, with a fake ‘group’ behind it (Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor) was taken seriously, hijacked and made viral.
I never started a facebook page; I never set up any place for pepole to send drawings to and I never received any drawings (I see that two European graduate students and another woman started the facebook pages).
My one-off cartoon does not work well as a long-term plan. The vitriol this ‘day’ has brought out, of people who only want to draw obscene images, is offensive to Muslims who did nothing to endanger our right to expression in the first place. Only Viacom and Revolution Muslim are to blame, so…draw them instead!
I apologize to people of Muslim faith and ask that this ‘day’ be called off.
Thank you to those who are turning this crazy thing into an opportunity for dialogue.
Oh, and screw all of you who are mad at me for not leading a ‘movement’. My cartoon was the beginning and end of what I had to say about this creepy, historic censorship. (By the way, where is Cowardly Central now? Pretty dang quiet. Guess they can dish it out but can’t take it.)

Facebook disappoints for being blocked in Pakistan

 WASHINGTON: Facebook is disappointed at being blocked in Pakistan over a contest that encourages users to post caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed and may make the offending page inaccessible to users there, the social network said late Wednesday.

"We are very disappointed with the Pakistani courts' decision to block Facebook without warning, and suspect our users there feel the same way," Facebook said in a statement to French news agency.

"We are analyzing the situation and the legal considerations, and will take appropriate action, which may include making this content inaccessible to users in Pakistan," it said.

Pakistan blocked access to Facebook on a court order over a competition created by a Facebook user who set up a page called "Draw Mohammed Day," inviting people to send in caricatures of the Muslim prophet on May 20.

Islam strictly prohibits depictions of Prophet Mohammed as blasphemous and Muslims around the world staged angry protests over the publication of satirical cartoons of the prophet in European newspapers in 2006.

The statement from the Palo Alto, California-based social network said "we want Facebook to be a place where people can openly discuss issues and express their views, while respecting the rights and feelings of others.

Real estate giant Nakheel, at the centre of the Dubai debt crisis, reported a 13.4 billion dirhams (3.64 billion dollar) loss Wednesday for the first half of 2009 after a large writedown of asset values.
The developer, whose 3.5 billion dollar Islamic bond debt sparked parent Dubai World's move to ask lenders for a temporary payment suspension, said revenues had plunged 78.1 percent in the six months to June 30 to 1.97 billion dirhams (537 million dollars) from 9.0 billion dirhams (2.45 billion dollars) a year earlier.
The developer of the Gulf emirate's extravagant palm-shaped islands took 12.2 billion dirhams in "impairment losses" stemming from a writedown of land values as the property market in Dubai has plunged in the past year.
Also included are projects the company said would be delayed or scaled down.
"The management no longer considers these project costs to be fully recoverable," it said in the six month report.
Nakheel is part of the government-controlled Dubai World group, which late last month shocked global financial markets by asking for a six-month delay in repayments on Nakheel's sukuk bond which matures on December 14.
Dubai's government has said it will not guarantee the debts of Nakheel or Dubai World, which has a total debt estimated at 59 billion dollars.

Thousands of Chickens Tortured by KFC Supplier

In July 2004, PETA revealed the results of an investigation into a KFC-supplying slaughterhouse in Moorefield, West Virginia, where workers were caught on video stomping on chickens, kicking them, and violently slamming them against floors and walls. Workers also ripped the animals' beaks off, twisted their heads off, spat tobacco into their eyes and mouths, spray-painted their faces, and squeezed their bodies so hard that the birds expelled feces—all while the chickens were still alive. Dan Rather echoed the views of all kind people when he said on the CBS Evening News, “[T]here's no mistaking what [the video] depicts: cruelty to animals, chickens horribly mistreated before they're slaughtered for a fast-food chain.”

The video from the investigation was broadcast by television stations around the world as well as all three national evening news shows, Good Morning America, and all the cable news networks. Plus, more than a million people have watched the footage on PETA's Web site.

The world's leading animal welfare experts condemned the cruelty at this KFC supplier. Colorado State University professor of animal science, biomedical sciences, and philosophy, university distinguished professor, and university bioethicist Dr. Bernard Rollin writes, “I can unequivocally state that the behavior I saw exemplified in [this] videotape was totally unacceptable. … The tape showed evidence of a work force that apparently failed to recognize that chickens are living sentient beings capable of feeling pain and distress.” Dr. Temple Grandin, perhaps the industry's leading farmed-animal welfare expert, writes, “The behavior of the plant employees was atrocious,” and asserts that even though she has toured poultry facilities in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, France, the Netherlands, and the U.K., the video showed “the WORST employee behavior I have ever seen in a poultry plant.” University of Guelph professor of applied ethology and university chair in animal welfare Dr. Ian Duncan writes, “This tape depicts scenes of the worst cruelty I have ever witnessed against chickens … and it is extremely hard to accept that this is occurring in the United States of America.”
