All I Want For Christmas...

... is him. My own dapper young Don Draper. Or his cute dog. I'd take either.

"Today the well-off 55-year-old is likely to be the worst-dressed man in the room, wearing a saggy T-shirt and jeans. The cash-poor 25-year-old is in a natty sport coat and skinny tie bought at Topman for a song. Young men are embracing the “Mad Men” elements of style in a way that the older men never did, still don’t and just won’t." - NYT

Kid Cudi is My Man of the Year

My friends are amused by my affection for Kid Cudi. I can't help but earnestly play his music on my indie rock-heavy iPod, right alongside Devendra Banhart and Death Cab for Cutie. I have had all the tracks from Man on the Moon on heavy rotation since summer, and "Pursuit of Happiness" is often on repeat.

I was thrilled to see Cudi mentioned next to other "men of the year" like Clint Eastwood, Barack Obama and Alec Baldwin in my brother's copy of GQ this weekend. The article isn't avaiable online, but the issue is definitely worth picking up the next time you raid the magazine shelves.

Even better? The photo shoot with Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

That's Fantastic, Mr. Fox

My brother graciously agreed to go see Fantastic Mr. Fox with me. Granted, he's a huge Wes Anderson fan, but if you knew my brother, you probably wouldn't believe that he would join me for an animated movie.

I guess when it comes down to it, we're all kids at heart. Especially Jason Schwartzman.

The movie was charming and sweet and completely the kind of movie you should see on Thanksgiving with your family. Wes Anderson definitely managed to put his stamp on the Roald Dahl tale, making for a brilliantly off-beat children's movie that your older brother will enjoy more than your little cousin.

Beau Tie

With my latest fashion icon in mind, the impressively dapper twelve year-old Arlo Weiner, these bowties are just the thing to liven up a springtime wardrobe.

Not ready to try the natty necktie? These little boy's bowties from J. Crew are just asking to be worn a la Blair as a hair adornment. Wear it behind the ear, atop a ponytail, or fastened to a headband. When you exhaust the options, wrap it up for safe keeping. Your own little Arlo Weiner will just love it one day.

Rap Stars in Boat Shoes

In the latest issue of Nylon, Asher Roth told the magazine that the most unassuming thing about him is that, "Um... I wear boat shoes." I've been a big fan of the college student-turned-rap star since I caught him on Late Call with Carson Daly in December, and I am beyond delighted every time his tune comes over the speakers when I'm out on the town.

But, more than I like his cheesy hip hop, I love the fact that he was a state university frat boy who continues to wear his Topsiders with pride. Since he's on the brink of hitting the big time, perhaps he should trade in those Sperry originals for a pair of these Sebago x Colette kicks. Much more stage-worthy, and they come in women's sizes for you budding MIAs and Lady GaGas.

Elementary Haberdashery

"My mom got the jacket for me—I love it because I love Frank Sinatra and this is like something he would wear. I wore the jacket with the pants because I like the different plaids together. I thought the blue in the necklace brought out the blue in the pants."

Sometimes the wisest fashion advice comes from kids who aren't old enough to buy their own clothes or tie their own shoes or fasten their own belts. Allow GQ to introduce Arlo Weiner, the eight year-old son of the creator of sartorially-savvy Mad Men. We could all take a cue from this third-grader's fashion fearlessness.

As I sit here in my fleece and leggings, I certainly know I should. In my defense, I've been doing nothing but studying, but Arlo considers an event as ordinary as school a worthy situation for top hats and tuxedo tails.

Better break out the diamonds and designer shoes...

Scott's Honor

"Style fills the gap between how you see yourself and how you want other people to see you. It is not a mysterious quality reserved for Cary Grant or Liberace. You have a sense of it in there somewhere. It's just a matter of finding a way to express it without seeming like you're trying."

Details asked Band of Outsider's designer Scott Sternberg to list his ten rules of style. Judging from the above quote, rule number ten, he's as brilliant and bright as you might expect.

But don't be fooled, because rules one through nine sound exactly like "advice" that would come out of my twenty-two year old brother's mouth. See number six. ("That skin-toned paste your girlfriend gave you to treat your pimple is makeup. Don't kid yourself. You're a girl if you use it. Figure something else out.")

Turns out Mr. Sternberg is on the Ralph Lauren spectrum of male designers, in comparison to say, Thom Browne or Marc Jacobs. He sounds just like a frat boy, which is rather unexpected from a guy who wears bow ties day in and day out. In other words, he's got to be straight, he's hopefully single, and he's definitely worth seeking out, if only to improve your wardrobe.

Gossip Guy

"I can do this role with my eyes closed and my arms behind my back. What I'm looking for now is something challenging. I always joke with the show’s creators, 'Anytime you want me to do drugs or contemplate suicide, I’ll do it.'"

As if I needed any more convincing that I should subscribe to GQ, this photo shoot with Penn Badgley, spotted in my brother's copy, has really pushed it from "extravagance" to "necessity."

Saying that I read GQ "for the articles" is a bit like a man saying he reads Playboy for the same reason.

I enjoy the editorials immensely... but seeing cute guys wearing Thom Browne (not to mention Thom Browne wearing Thom Browne) might have a little to do with my love of the magazine, too.

An Aesthetic Pursuit

Link

When I a) grow up or b) finally have time to have a life outside of the confines of the classroom and library, I want a boyfriend who wears bowties. Not just because I love a boy in bowties... mostly because I could borrow them and wear them in my hair.

If you are a boy, have a boyfriend, or love the style of foppy Boy/Band of Horses designer Scott Sternberg, you should definitely be reading The Pursuit Aesthetic.

Fratastic

I see classmates bonging beer on a weekly basis (welcome to college!), but I never thought it was possible to look classy while chugging brewskis out of a funnel until I caught the Vena Cava girls and Shipley & Halmos boys in the act.

Two of my favorite designing duos celebrating the debut of their spring collections Animal House-style? So frat. Somehow beer-bonging girls don't look quite as glamorous while tailgating outside of the football stadium decked out in shrunken football jerseys and flipflops... maybe because the state school fraternity boys aren't quite as cute as Sam Shipley.
